Our Story
Seven Sisters Food Hub grew out of more than 14 years of experience connecting local farms with communities across the Mid-Atlantic.
Launched by Moon Valley Farm, a 70-acre organic and GAP-certified farm in Woodsboro, Maryland, Seven Sisters builds on a network of more than 75 partner farms, 100+ restaurant and business customers, and school district partnerships throughout Maryland.
Moon Valley Farm focuses on direct-to-consumer sales through its year-round CSA and online farmers market. Seven Sisters focuses on restaurant, school, hospital, and institutional sales, helping farmers navigate the sales, contracting, and logistics involved in larger accounts.
Our Mission
Our mission is to strengthen the regional food system by making it easier for local farms to sell to larger markets and for institutions to source local food.
Institutional sales require more than growing great food. They involve sales and customer relationships, vendor applications and contracts, refrigerated transportation, cold storage, traceability, food safety, processing, and the ability to fulfill consistent orders.
Seven Sisters provides this infrastructure and coordinates a network of regional farms, allowing us to offer a reliable supply of high-quality, competitively priced local food across the seasons.
What We Do
Seven Sisters brings food from farms across Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic together in one regional food hub, where it can be aggregated, stored, processed, packed, and distributed to the communities we serve.
We also help partner farms access new markets by supporting food-safety requirements, certifications such as GAP and organic, and the logistics involved in selling to larger buyers.
Our processing facility provides another important resource for farmers. We can process seconds and surplus produce, creating an additional market for food that might otherwise have limited value or go to waste.
Building a Stronger Local Food System
A strong local food system needs both strong farms and reliable markets. Seven Sisters helps connect farmers with restaurants, schools, hospitals, food assistance programs, and other institutions that want to purchase local food.
By bringing farms together and providing the infrastructure needed to reach larger markets, we help create more consistent sales opportunities for farmers and make it easier for institutions to source local food.
Our goal is simple: make it easier to grow, sell, and eat more local food in the Mid-Atlantic.
‘Seven Sisters’ Name
Seven Sisters Food Hub takes its name from the Pleiades — a small, bright star cluster that has guided farmers for millennia. Ancient Greek farmers tracked its pre-dawn rise as the signal to begin harvest, and its setting as the cue to start plowing for the next season. Across North America, Indigenous nations developed their own rich traditions of reading the Pleiades and other stars to time planting, harvest, and ceremony — knowledge passed down for generations, long before written calendars existed.
The Seven Sisters have quite literally helped humans know when and how to grow food since the earliest days of agriculture. We chose the name because it carries that same spirit forward: a reminder that farming has always been about paying attention to natural cycles, working in coordination with others, and trusting knowledge that gets passed hand to hand, season to season. It's a fitting name for a food hub built to help our region's farms and food businesses do the same — together.
